If you are not a U.S. citizen who watches the Public Broadcast Service (PBS) - odds are very good you have no idea who Judy Woodruff is or care. Bear with me there is a knitting connection.
Judy Woodruff is one of the rotating senior correspondents who anchors on PBS's Newshour, a nightly, hour-long news program. A unique characteristic of this program is it allows guests to speak for long periods of time about a specific topic. Segments can go on for several minutes because there is time to fill during an entire hour and there's no need to chop segments up for commercial breaks. Paul and I periodically refer to it as the Snoozehour because some long segments can be quite boring. (Really how many in-depth programs can be done about the faltering U.S. economy in the last, say five years, before the listener just checks out to take a nap.)
So you might be asking yourself: "What does Judy Woodruff have to do with knitting?" Well on Monday, May 13 she looked like this without the Play. (Sorry I paused the video and simply took a screen shot. I have no idea how to remove the Play from the photo.)
That lovely turquoise sweater Judy is wearing became quite the topic of discussion in our house. First Judy tends to wear dressier clothing, things that at least from the top up, appear to be women's suits. Thus it is quite unusual for her to be dressed so casually.
Second, Paul believes this 66 year old wearing what very well may be a handmade sweater means hand knits are popular. I guess it has to do with her being on television (I didn't argue with him, but I don't think anyone over the age of 60 can really be called a trendsetter, much less someone working for PBS. [Sometimes it is just best to keep these thoughts to oneself.] Having said that I wouldn't mind making something like her sweater for myself if I could. [No one would argue I am a trendsetter either, BTW.])
Third, we had an in-depth discussion about the sweater itself. Was it knit, was it crocheted, hand or machine made -- inquiring minds had to know. To find the answer to these questions I was forced to find the video online for a much closer look at said sweater. I am guessing, of course, but I think it is knit and hand knit to boot. (Maybe I can find a pattern for myself.)
Then about 20 minutes after our conversation about Ms. Woodruff was complete, Paul suggested I make the sweater a topic for one of my blog posts. I sputtered about there not being enough to write about, but then to myself I thought, maybe there is. You, of course can be the judge on that count. I do truly appreciate Paul's spending time trying to locate blog post ideas for me though.
And if you find out anything in cyberspace about Judy Woodruff's turquoise sweater worn during the PBS Newshours for Monday, May 13, let me know. My search was a bust.
