My interest in creating is vast, my skills, well let's say they are more in the half vast range. When I was presented with the possibility to combine two of them my curiosity was piqued.
I do enjoy decorating cakes and cupcakes. I've been decorating cakes since my now 32 year old turned 1. At the time we lived far away from family so to make a birthday more celebratory I made specialty cakes. I remember a "Kitt" car cake (Lex loved Knight Rider, a TV show starring a young David Hasselhoff), a fuzzy stand up bear cake for Dack, and several other cakes customized to fit the requests of the birthday boy. I've also been known to take on wedding cakes, like one to feed about 300 people for my niece and another for Dack and Nicole's wedding with fondant. If you'd like to see that cake and what Nicole had to say about it a year later, check out her blog post about the topic.
Cupcakes have always been an interest because I love the idea of handheld cake pieces. I picked up on the craze as their popularity increased. Starting with a focus on the decorating part of cupcakes, my interests turned to baking interestingly flavored cupcakes and frostings more recently. The poor folks I work with get to share in all my failures and successes in this realm. We manage a monthly 15-minute birthday party, and I tend to be the one more than happy to contribute the goodies, which sometimes are better than others. Thanks for sharing in the calories, team! If the cupcakes stay in the house Paul and I will eat them. Out of the house we are required to share.
This photo really got me thinking what fun it would be to combine my interest in decorating cupcakes with knitting:
At first glance I thought I was looking at knitting but the caption helped clear up that I was in fact looking at cupcakes. The blue stockinette stitched scarf with the white needle in the lower right-handed corner is very well done. The creator, Lolo from Boston, used marzipan (a sugar and almond paste confection that remains pliable long enough to shape it) to make the knitted items you see. She said it took her about 5 hours to decorate a dozen cupcakes. I love that Lolo just used a knife to make the stitches and a spoon to help shape the sweater. Should you want to see more of this work, click here. Lolo was also on Martha Stewart's show demonstrating how to make the sweaters and yarn balls. You may or may not want to spend approximately 6.5 minutes watching, but here's the link if you are so inclined. I'll be spending a fair amount of time checking it out and then practicing to see if I can duplicate something like her handiwork.
Co-workers beware there may be some knitting-like decorations on our June birthday cupcakes. Thanks Lolo from Boston for combining my interests with one great idea.
